May 12, 2012 - I agree that media and advertising send out messages about aspirational "beauty". But there are large swathes of society that have their own beauty ideals that are not influenced by the mainstream media. I understand about bucking the trend. I keep my hair short and don't wear make-up, this occasionally leads me to feel negatively judged but the trick is to not care about the thoughts of others. If you can free yourself from the worry of negative judgement then you are free to be yourself.

I think media, and advertisements symbolize societal standards of beauty. thats what i'm basing my opinions on. im transitioning to natural hair and its scary b.c I still think ppl around me prefer straight hair. im doing it anyway, because I need to embrace myself, but its still in the back of my mind
