Buddy had several GREAT small bands in the 50's and 60's, and there are several fantastic recordings with those bands.
Plus, Buddy was with JATP for a while, as well.
Why must we compare? There were many Master Jazz drummers, and they contributed their own style and concept.
Buddy did his thing, Elvin did his, etc . . . .
May 3, 2012 - Buddy Rich did one thing really, really well - and that's it. Big band drumming. In fact, classic big band drumming (swing era stuff), and that's it. Nothing else.
Name one classic small band recording Buddy played on. There's not one. Not one. Buddy played big band and that's it. That's ALL he did. It's easy to be "the best" at something when you have such a narrow scope.
Tony, Elvin, Philly Joe, Roy, Jack, etc ... All those guys played on multiple classics. They're the cats, not Buddy.
