This is a little different from freezing water because the mist produced is very dense and you can actually scoop it up in your hand very easily. I'm not actually touching liquid nitrogen, I'm just touching the acetone mist above it. Also when it freezes the acetone becomes a snow rather than just creating a sheet of ice like in water. These test experiments were done outside the laboratory and in the real time of -15 degrees below zero. The water must be thrown up, as the cold air easily surrounds the drops and freezes them. This experiment was the suggestion of my "Thermal Heat Pump expert", Rick Stanton of Sibley Sheet Metal, Inc. In this video we show how a drop of water freezes into a pointy shape when deposited on a cold surface. The process of solidification can be observed very clearly due to the change in refraction when water turns into ice. The drop remains approximately spherical during most of the process, with a freezing front moving upwards and smoothly following the interface. However, at the final stage of freezing, when the last cap of liquid turns into ice, a singular tip develops spontaneously. Interestingly, the sharp tip of the ice drop acts as a preferential site for deposition of water vapour, and a beautiful "tree" of ice crystals develops right at the tip.
